Day 3 (16th sept), Monistral D’Alliers to Saugues, 12.2 km/7.6 miles

Whence we came. Can you tell it was a steep climb? Great way to wake up.

Lots of steep inclines and descents today, but not so daunting as they looked on the app. Thankfully,  lots of clouds scudding across the sky and stiff breezes to keep us cool when the sun shone.

Such a cool Peugeot
I wonder how I would do in such a beautiful,  but isolated area.
France is still staunchly, deeply Catholic.
Tree trunks carved on the way into Saugues.
Christ on stilts

Don’t judge me.

La bête de Gevaudan

During the middle ages sometime  a beast roamed the area, killing 60 or so people. It was finally killed and brought to the King as proof – of its existence? Of its slaying… There’s  locally brewed beer in the area that goes by the name, La Bête.

The church in Saugues, in which resides the Christ on stilts. It’s quite orthodox – Mary is barely present.
Tour de Seigneur (Lord’s – as in lord of the land – Tower) all that’s left of 13th C Tour des Anglais as stones from the building were used to rebuild homes lost to a fire in 1788 when the communal oven erupted destroying 104 homes.

Great dinner at our gîte, La Margeride. Salad, slow roasted beef in a delicious broth, rice, bread, 3 cheeses, wine, and a commercial pre-packaged ice cream cone. A good breakfast too – as in more than bread, butter, and jam, ie yogurt and granola. Although the French bread is typically so good, that it’s fine.

On to day 4….

I thought of you again today walking in the deep countryside, no villages, just pine woods and fields. Thought of your feet walking the same trail.

The “Marian” phase or “Notre Dame period” occured around 1200 + so one would not find Mary in churces prior. Tell me more about the trees…dod pilgrims shap them /

The carved tree trunks? Not much is known about them. Could have been a local or a local pilgrim… probably not a Pilgrim traveling through. Locals do add to the route. Today a number of poetic offerings were placed en route-handwritten and encased in plastic as protection from the rain. All in French, bien sûr.

So much delicious scenery and wonderful sounding foods you tempt us with as you record these descriptive posts and pictures. If you travel back through Lyon, I suggest you visit the De Exupery museum with its writings and art from that amazing writer/artist/aviator. I thought of you in reading his departure from France en route to Saigon. He names places you have shared with us on your journey.
“I avoided Paris with a jerk and up the Seine, at Melun. I was heading for the valley of Loire, below me lies Lyon. Over the Rhone, with Mt. Ventoux capped in snow, There lies Marignane and here comes Marseille. How close is your journey on earth as his was in the heavens?
